💎 “Then Miriam said, ‘My soul magnifies Adonai, and my spirit greatly rejoices in God, my Savior. For He has looked with care upon the humble state of His maidservant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done a great thing for me, and holy is His name. And his mercy is from generation to generation to the ones who fear Him. He has displayed power with His arm. He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down rulers from thrones and exalted humble ones. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent away the rich empty-handed. He has helped His servant Israel, remembering His mercy, just as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.’” (Luk 1:46-55, TLV)
The name Mary was derived from the ancient Hebrew name Miriam. The beautiful Song of Miriam (Mary) is often called the Magnificat, after the Latin translation of the first few words – [My soul] magnifies [Adonai]. This song resembles Hannah’s song in 1 Samuel 2:1-10, and it has at least 12 other references to the Old Testament. Miriam (Mary) was a woman who studied and knew God’s Word well, and the scriptures were treasured in her heart and came out through her song.
- My spirit greatly rejoices in God, my Savior. (v47)
Miriam (Mary) was greatly gifted and highly privileged, and she was humble to give praises and honor to the LORD. As she reflected on God’s faithfulness and prepared her to be the mother of our promised Savior, she acknowledged with humility even though she knew that all generations will call her blessed.
- For the Mighty One has done a great thing for me. (v49)
This song celebrates the faithfulness, goodness and power of God. Miriam’s (Mary’s) trust was in God, and her song shows the vanity of trusting in self, in political power and in wealth. Though the child was not yet born, Miriam (Mary) rejoiced and glorified God. She sang over an unborn mercy, and she went on to declare God’s mercy, His mighty works and His compassion to the needy.
What is your song today? Are you able to sing over unborn mercy with humility, simply because you believe that the Lord would fulfill His promises to you (v45)? Does your song focus on what you need and what you do? Or does your song focus on our God, our Father, our Savior, and all He has done for us? May our soul magnify Adonai and our spirit greatly rejoices in God today!
🙏 Dear Father, thank you for this beautiful Song of Miriam (Mary) as a reminder that it is all about You. We glorify You and honor You for your great mercy to us and our generations. You are the centre of our life and thank You for doing great things for us. Holy is your name. In the Name of Yeshua we pray and bless You, Amen.
